We all agree that office desk is the central of workplace and therefore has important function to support our activities during office hours. It should be designed ergonomically to improve the productivity and efficiency. And if you are looking for one to be placed in the corner of the room then ergonomic corner desk is the answer. Unfortunately it is usually priced more expensive than other regular office desks. However, there are some simple and smart techniques to make an ergonomic corner desk or even we can set any regular desk ergonomically.

The basic issue that we must concern in “Ergonomic tag” is the object design fits the user. This means the design object (desk) should be able to be adjusted by user (personally), especially if user wants to use for hours at time. Adjusting the desk or office chair is also important and closely associated to the health. The right ergonomic position of your body on chair and desk will be helpful to promote good posture in long term. Moreover it will be useful to prevent unwanted static injuries and repetitive motion injuries, such as back pain, stiff neck, headache, tunnel irritation due to the over repetitive motion of using keyboard and mouse, etc.

Positioning the office chair ergonomically and correctly

  1. Make sure your feet are properly flat of the room floor. The thighs must be parallel to your floor. When you are barefoot don’t miss to consider the height difference (the length of your feet when they are not barefoot and barefoot is different)! For ladies, it is better to take off the high heels when we are at our desk.
  2. Use a stepstool or box if necessary to make sure your feet are able to reach the surface of the room floor comfortably.
  3. If we think that our knees are too high than our hips, we can try to place scraps of wood or a taller chair.
  4. There should be adequate space under the desk for the motion of your feet.
  5. Modern office chair usually has wheels for better mobility but make sure we choose one that is stable enough to across on the floor of the office room. It is more recommended to use one that has five wheels than four wheels.
  6. The last idea, if there is adequate budget you can purchase a real mesh ergonomic office chair. It is comfortable seating furniture with a lot of ergonomic adjustable features and sealed with high quality of mesh material (so useful to keep the body far away from the sweat problem if we are sitting for long hours).

Setting the office corner desk ergonomically and correctly

  1. Take a look at the height of your arms when you are sitting and then make sure they are equivalent to the height of the desk (the surface of top desk). Look your elbows, they should be as close as possible at least 90 degrees angle.
  2. Take a look at your shoulder! Make sure they never have to rise to work at the desk. Adjust the height of the chair or desk so that your shoulders are positioned in a neutral condition. This will be so helpful if you have to sit on your chair for hours at time.
  3. Set and make sure that the computer monitor at eye level. The position of the monitor should be in the same direction of your body. Instance; avoid placing monitor in the edge of the desk while your body is positioned in the middle of the desk, so it is better also to place the monitor on the middle of the desk.
  4. Make sure the mouse of the computer get adequate space for moving. Using the mouse in a narrow area will cause shoulder & wrist injuries.
  5. Avoid using low quality of gel wrist pad for the keyboard. While you are typing on the keyboard, make sure your wrists are straight (not bent or curled). The keyboard and mouse should comfortably reachable from your hand when you are sitting! Use the gel pad under the forearms closer to the elbows. Use ergonomic keyboard if necessary for more comfortable positioning.
  6. Avoid placing the corner desk in the middle of the room otherwise you will lose the big advantage of it. As the name suggests, corner l-shaped desk is designed and purposed to fit nicely in the corner of the room. This position is also beneficial to save and make the desk far away from foot traffic accident. Moreover, this idea also will be helpful to make the room feel larger.
  7. In addition, whatever the comfortable of your desk and chair, it is better to take five minutes to get up for every 30-45 minutes. Take part in a weightlifting program if necessary, particularly if you are professional worker and can work at desk & chair for hours a day! You can also try to purchase and use treadmill desk if the budget permits.
