Oak roll top desk

Ok… Back to the main topic! So…How to restore and refinish an oak roll top desk? The information below is simply methods that maybe helpful for you:

  1. First, remove the previous finish completely from the oak surface of desk! We can use the brush and heavy-coat of chemical-stripper to make easily of the removing process!
  2. Perhaps there are several spot of the old finish that cannot be removed easily. Therefore you can use a steel wood to remove those spots, but be careful not to gouge the surface of wood. Don’t miss to use a damp cloth when doing the wipe desk and cleaning the stripper off.
  3. Next, use the high quality sandpaper (120-grit) to sand the surface! Make ensure the old veneer is removed completely and the surface is rough! Then use a tack-cloth to clean the surface from sawdust and replay the sanding procedure by using sandpaper (220-grit).
  4. Use the grain filler to open gain structure of the oak wood surface! This is also helpful to result a cleaner finish. Let the filler dry completely and then scrape it and sand again the surface with sandpaper (220-grit).
  5. Now it is time to brush the desk. Use a clean-brush to brush the heavy coat of ‘sanding-sealer’ and allow it dry! Then once again sand with sandpaper (220-grit), lightly. Don’t miss to use a tack cloth for the wipe. Then ensure the stain absorbs into the surface properly (or completely dry) when brushing a coat of stain. Don’t forget to use a ‘clean’ cloth to wipe-off the excess stain!
  6. Protecting the finish, a light coat-polyurethane is so recommended. Then use it to brush the entire oak roll top desk! Make sure the polyurethane dry completely before sanding and doing the wipe procedure with sandpaper (220-grit) and tack cloth! Getting the best result, by applying one more thin-coat is so advisable.
