A small & simple kid desk (illustration)

Like adults, kids or children need a proper desk to support their activities, especially when they are learning, writing and reading. However, their desks are not similar like desks for adults but usually relatively smaller in size and friendly (made with friendly and safely materials, like wood). The paint also should be safe for their skin. For practically solution, you can purchase those kids desks in your local furniture stores with a more affordable price.

On other hand, making kid corner desk is not too difficult. It is relatively simple DIY project that you can do by yourself. Furthermore, this option is also nice idea if you want to give a special gift for your child with your own handmade. There is special satisfaction that you cannot get from buying a new child desk in the furniture shop. Ok, below is simple guide for you on how to make it practically:

1. First, prepare all materials and tools for supporting the project.

2. Like mentioned before, I think wood is the best material that is perfectly safe for kids. So, find a proper size of pieces of wood. For standard size, provide pieces of wood with the size specifications; five pieces of wood for the feet of corner desk (26 inches), one piece of wood for the main top desk (54×30 inches) and for other side of l-shaped design (26×30 inches).

3. Take both pieces (54×30 inches and 26×30 inches) and line up both for making L-shape! Joint both permanently by using nails. Make the nails is invisible for the safety reason of your kid. For the further information about the technical of joining both pieces properly, strongly and safely, you can ask to a carpenter or woodworker in your local area.

4. Then joint the feet, with four feet in the edge of L-shape surface and one in the outside center of L-shape.

5. Use the proper-sandpapers to sand the surface of the wood pieces.

6. Make the l-shaped corner kid desk colorful with some paint colors. Consider the color interior of the kid’s room when considering the paint colors.

7. Be careful,… make sure the paint is safe for children! But the big question is how to choose the safe paints or non-toxic paints? It is so recommended to choose paints that free of Volatile Organic Compounds [VOC]. This issue will be explored more in the next article!

8. Other idea, you can add some storage space facilities like drawers to store pencils, pens, etc.
